Expert Medical Witness

Professor Patankar has been a practising Expert Medical Witness in the UK since 2009, bringing over 17 years of dedicated experience to medicolegal practice. His work as an expert witness draws directly on his clinical expertise as a senior Consultant Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiologist, giving solicitors, barristers, and the courts access to a highly specialist and practising clinician at the forefront of the field.

He currently completes 1–2 clinical negligence reports per month, maintaining a focused but active medicolegal practice alongside his NHS and private clinical commitments. His claimant-to-defendant ratio is approximately 80:20, reflecting wide instruction from both claimant and defendant solicitors, as well as acceptance of court-appointed joint expert instructions.

Areas of Specialist Expertise

Professor Patankar's medicolegal work is concentrated in the areas where he has the deepest clinical experience:

  • Diagnostic Neuroradiology — Standard of reporting in CT and MRI of the brain and spine, missed diagnoses, incidental findings, and interpretation errors in adult neuroimaging
  • Interventional Neuroradiology — Technical standards, procedural decision-making, complication management, and outcomes in neurovascular intervention
  • Brain Aneurysm Treatment — Clinical negligence in aneurysm diagnosis, timing of treatment, technique selection (coiling, flow diversion, intrasaccular devices), and peri-procedural management
  • Adult Brain Radiology — Stroke imaging, tumour detection and characterisation, demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease, skull base and head & neck pathology
  • Spine Neuroradiology — Spinal cord and nerve root pathology, disc disease, myelopathy, post-operative imaging, and vascular spinal conditions

Types of Reports

Professor Patankar provides the full range of medicolegal reports required in clinical negligence litigation, including:

  • Breach of duty (bench) reports — independent assessment of whether the standard of care fell below that expected of a reasonably competent specialist
  • Causation reports — analysis of whether any identified breach caused or materially contributed to harm
  • Prognosis reports — expert opinion on long-term clinical outlook and impact of neurological or neurovascular injury

Academic Contributions to Legal Practice

Professor Patankar has contributed to the academic interface between neuroradiology and the law. He co-authored the chapter "Post Mortem Imaging of the Brain" in the textbook The Autopsy: A Guide for the Legal Profession (eds. Paul Marks and Ian Richmond), providing forensic and legal professionals with a specialist reference on post-mortem neuroimaging.
