He also has several diplomas, a DMRD in Medical Radiodiagnosis from the University of Bombay, a DMRE in Medical Radiology & Electrology from the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Bombay and a Diplomate of National Board of Examinations in Radiology from the Ministry of Health, Bombay, which is equivalent to an MD. Furthermore, he went on to specialist diagnostic neuroradiology training as a visiting fellow in North Carolina and Chicago in the USA.
Alongside Professor Patankar’s extensive experience in complex endovascular procedures especially complex aneurysm treatment, involved with over 3,000 aneurysm coiling cases having acted as the Primary Operator for more than 2,000 of these cases, and performed over 10,000 diagnostic catheter angiograms, alongside advanced aneurysm treatments using intrasaccular devices such as WEB, Contour, Neqstent, Nautilus, Eclips and flow diverter techniques such as Pipeline, Surpass Evolve, P64, Derivo, Silk stents, he has an esteemed reputation as an educator and proctors cases all over the world. He is Director and Professor of Radiology at the University of Bolton and Honorary Professor in Informatics, Imaging and Data Sciences at the University of Manchester. His teaching roles include visiting professorships at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and adjunct faculty posts at Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, in addition to serving as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds. Professor Patankar has been a Principal Investigator and Local PI in multiple clinical trials, including the PMCF study for Contour and the MEVO study. He has served as Chief Investigator for the NIHR-supported multicentre prospective Presize trial: “Real world performance evaluation of Presize neurovascular medical software in a clinical setting,” and for the Innovate UK Project: “Presize diagnostic medical device software for increased precision in advance selection of the best surgical scenario for every patient at the point of diagnosis.”
Professor Patankar has a special interest in undertaking research into in silico trials and computer modelling flow studies and simulation studies for brain aneurysms. He is an Invited Faculty on National & International Conferences & Symposiums over the past several years and has provided comprehensive instructional courses to equip emerging neuroradiologists with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles. He serves as a member on various national and international committees.
A member of the Royal College of Radiologists, UK Neurovascular Group, British Society of Neuroradiology, Indian Society of Radiology and Indian Society of Neuroradiology, Professor Patankar has contributed extensively to the academic field. He has served as Associate Editor for the Indian Journal of Radiology, British Journal of Radiology, and Annals of Neurosurgery, and as Scientific Journal Reviewer for the Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery, among numerous other national and international journals. His work has been recognised with six national CEA points awarded by the NHS for his contribution to clinical excellence.
